When to Replace an Engine Damper
The crankshaft damper on the front of the engine absorbs vibration that would otherwise stress the crankshaft. A worn damper can lead to a broken crankshaft or damage to gear driven parts, so it is worth checking.
On a rubber damper, look for cracked or bulging rubber and for an outer ring that has shifted or wobbles. On a fluid filled viscous damper, look for dents, leaks or bulging. A dented viscous damper should be replaced.
Check your service manual for a replacement interval, and replace the damper whenever the engine is overhauled.
