How to Choose the Right PTO Shaft
Start with your tractor's PTO speed and spline. A 540 RPM output shaft is 1 3/8 inch with 6 splines. A 1000 RPM output shaft is either 1 3/8 inch with 21 splines or 1 3/4 inch with 20 splines. The implement driveline has to match both the speed and the spline.
Length matters too. The driveline has to stay overlapped at its longest point and must not bottom out at its shortest point as the hitch moves. Measure with the implement hooked up, at the closest and farthest positions.
Look at the whole driveline, not just the tubes. Worn cross and bearing kits, a damaged shield or a missing safety chain are reasons to repair before the next job, and many of those parts are sold separately.

How do I tell a 540 shaft from a 1000 shaft?
Count the splines on the tractor's output shaft. Six splines means 540 RPM. Twenty or 21 splines means 1000 RPM.
Do I need a whole new driveline?
Not always. Yokes, cross and bearing kits, shields and shear bolts are often available on their own. Our parts counter can help you sort out which pieces you need.
Is it safe to run a PTO shaft without its shield?
No. A spinning shaft can catch clothing in an instant. Replace a cracked or missing shield before using the implement.
