How to Choose and Install Snap Rings
Snap rings hold bearings, gears and shafts in place. They come in internal styles that fit inside a bore and external styles that fit on a shaft, and the size has to match the groove exactly.
Use the snap ring listed for the assembly in the parts diagram, because thickness and material matter as much as diameter.
Install snap rings with proper snap ring pliers and only open the ring as far as it needs to go. A ring that has been stretched out of shape will not hold, so replace any ring that is bent or loose in its groove.

Internal rings fit into a groove inside a bore or housing. External rings fit into a groove on a shaft. They are not interchangeable.
