Picking the Right Hydraulic and Transmission Oil

On many John Deere tractors the transmission and hydraulics share one reservoir, so the oil has to protect gears, wet brakes, clutches and hydraulic pumps at the same time. That is what John Deere Hy-Gard transmission and hydraulic oil is made for.

Use the oil your operator's manual calls for. Some machines are built for standard Hy-Gard and others for Low Viscosity Hy-Gard, and some equipment, such as many excavators, uses a hydraulic only oil.

Change the oil and filters on the schedule in your manual, and sooner if the oil looks milky or dark or the machine has been working in extreme conditions. Keep fill caps and containers clean, because dirt is the main enemy of a hydraulic system.

Order online through John Deere's parts store with Koenig as your dealer, then pick it up at your Koenig store or have it shipped. If you are not sure you have the right part, call or stop by our parts counter with your model and serial number and we will look it up for you.

Hydraulic and Transmission Oils FAQ

What is the difference between Hy-Gard and Low Viscosity Hy-Gard?

They are different viscosity oils made for different machines. Check your operator's manual or ask our parts counter which one your machine needs, and do not substitute one for the other unless the manual allows it.

Can I use a universal tractor fluid instead?

Your operator's manual lists what the transmission and hydraulic system were designed for. Using the specified oil helps protect wet brakes and clutches from chatter and wear.

How often should I change my hydraulic oil?

Follow the interval in your operator's manual. If you are not sure, our parts counter can help you find the right oil and filters for your machine.
