Features
A 17.5-hp (13.0-kW), single-cylinder engine has plenty of power and torque to handle tough mowing, mulching, and bagging:
The no-tools oil drain valve is easy to access when changing engine oil.
The solid one-piece frame is constructed of 12-gauge, 0.105-in. (2.66-mm) steel:
The front axle is constructed of solid cast iron that will not bend:
The front bumper is included on the S130, S140, S160, S170, and S180. It is available as an optional attachment for the S100, S110, and S120.
The CargO Mount system is a combination of front- and rear-mounting points providing convenient and easy installation of the sun canopy, rear bagger, and other attachments.
An advantage of lawn tractors is their ability to use equipment for snow removal. Lawn tractor owners can add a John Deere snow blower or front blade to make quick work of moving snow whenever the need arises. Weather enclosure and tire-chain attachments add comfort and performance.
Equipment available for snow removal includes:
A Kanzaki® Tuff Torq® hydrostatic transmission gives an infinite choice of speeds and makes changing the direction of travel easy. Side-by-side foot pedals control the speed and direction of travel:
Appropriate transmissions are used in each model, depending on rear tire size and tractor performance requirements, to ensure excellent performance and reliability:
Kanzaki and Tuff Torq are trademarks of Kanzaki Kokyukoki Mfg. Co., Ltd.
The operator station is designed for operator comfort and easy operation:
Controls are easy to see and use:
Wide footrest areas with non-slip, anti-vibration floor mats are provided for operator comfort:
The operator seat has an 11-in. (28-cm) back height. It can be easily adjusted forward or rearward while the operator is in the seat, with seat travel of 5.5 in. (14 cm) and 10 different positions.
A beverage holder is located on the right-side fender for operator convenience.
Two long seat springs give plenty of seat travel to smooth out the ride, keeping the operator comfortable while operating the tractor.
Seat can be tilted forward for protection from the elements and to provide easy access to the fuel tank.
A storage compartment and beverage holder on the right-side fender are conveniently located and easy to use.
NOTE: A storage compartment cover is standard on S120, S130, S160, S170, and S180 Tractors and optional on the S100, S110, and S140.
The contoured dash has clean, attractive styling:
Side-by-side foot pedals control the speed and direction of travel:
A spring-assisted, ergonomically designed lift lever simplifies adjusting the mower cut height:
The parking brake control is conveniently located on the tractor pedestal for easy access. It holds the brake pedal securely in the locked position.
The mower deck is engaged with the easy-to-see and easy-to-use yellow lever above the dashboard. Its placement on the right side leaves a lot of room on the left, the entry side of the tractor, for the operator to get on and off the tractor.
CAUTION: Children or bystanders may be injured by rotating blades. Before traveling forward or rearward:
NOTE: Backing up while the mower is engaged is strongly discouraged. RIO should be used only when operating another attachment or when the operator deems it necessary to reposition the machine with the mower engaged.
NOTE: If the engine and mower or other attachment stops while repositioning the machine, return the attachment engagement lever/switch to the off position. Start the engine and engage mower or other attachment. Begin again with step 2.
The fuel tank gauge shows how much fuel is in the tank and can be seen without leaving the operator's seat:
John Deere riding lawn mowers are equipped with a QR code label that links to an owner support website. The label can be found on the rear fender, to the left of the seat.
The owner support website is formatted for smart phones and available without setting up an account and password. The QR code includes the mower’s serial number, enabling the owner support website to provide a maintenance schedule, service parts, attachments, how-to guide, videos, warranty information, and an operator’s manual for the specific mower.
The owner support website also allows users to purchase service parts, schedule dealer service, purchase extended warranties, and download the Equipment Mobile app. The Equipment Mobile app enables users to maintain a shared digital service record with their dealer.
The one-piece hood opens easily to permit checking and servicing the engine:
The engine fuel and oil filters, the oil check/fill tube, and the oil drain tube are exposed for serviceability when the hood is opened.
The seat tilts up and out of the way to make adding fuel easy.

A wash port is provided to make cleaning the underside of the mower deck easy:
The StarLock blade design keeps the blade bolt at the correct torque for easy removal.
Optional blades for difficult mulching or bagging conditions are available.
A cut-and-throw, 6.5-bu (229-L) bagger is sold separately and comes with bagging blades. Special bagging blades are not required but they can enhance performance.

Reviews
I bought a John Deere bagger for my zero turn. It’s a horrible design! Dirt and debris comes out of the mesh bags and comes out all underneath your legs and feet from under the mower. I called John Deere and they’re like well. You bought it from an independent dealer and you’ll have to deal with them. I said so you don’t stand behind your bad design? that was pretty much the end of it
I love it. Drives smoothly, cuts great. My lawn is beautiful.
I'm giving this company a 1 star I wish there were a zero then they would be worthy. I brought a john deer D100 to cut My front and rear year which was very small. My lawn guy warned me not to gett a deer. He said they are not what they use to be. Not listening I brought the D100 and its been one of the worst decisions I've ever made. It's been in the repair shop 3 times and Sat there about 3 months at a time. But the worst part is the units only have about 50 hours of use. Wow. Every place I call said that impossible, but it the truth. I've call John deere and ask the to replace the unit because it was just one that happened to be a lemon. They won't accept that because they think they are above normal. Now I'm at the point where I'm going to give it away because I'm not selling it and putting anyone in this situation. I know I'm just one person but stay away from john deere.
I purchased S100 in summer of 2021. During that summer, my trouble started with this mower with belt slipping off and uneven cut. Since, it was under warranty the local dealer sent a guy to fix. When he couldn't then they picked up and fixed. So, I was without lawn mower for more than a month. Recently (my 3rd summer of using) mower quit in the middle with burning rubber smell and doesn't start. Dealer said we can come, pick for a fee and give estimate. They will tell how much it cost. Also telling me it will take about a month before they can get it. This means that I will be again without a mower for rest of this summer (2024). This is a bad mower with bad service.
Delivery delayed but service great otherwise . JD improved their basic model (I had an L110 for the previous 22 years).
We bought this lawn mower a month ago and are satisfied with its performance. It is easy to operate.
A great improvement over my D100. Love the automatic transmission
I bought this one a month ago to replace my 15yo Snapper 28-inch rear engine riding mower. In 2009, the Snapper was only riding mower to fit thru 40-inch gate in 2004 white vinyl fence. Fence was extended in 2019 and 54-inch gate installed. Finally able to buy a John Deere S100 42-inch and have truly enjoyed it. Looking forward to January to use the bagger when the oak leaves begin to drop.
I love it!!! It is so much better than my old mower!!
Very happy with my S100 lawn tractor. It's my second John Deere and the quality continues to be great.
